Make Sure These Are Included On The Quote!!

Make Sure These Are Included On The Quote!!

If you are in the process of evaluating quotes for your new VoIP Hosted Solution then read on.

There are three essential items that are often intentionally left off the proposal to keep the cost down. You know the salesperson is trying to keep the bottom line under the competition and build the best case for a good ROI.

It is best to include everything needed to insure crystal clear call quality every time. Let the other person explain why they did not include these items in their proposal.

Item #1: A Router/Firewall that is optimized for VoIP. In larger organizations which are managed properly this is usually not an issue but the majority of the businesses I visit have less than 20 phones. In many of these I find the old black and blue Linksys router. This must be replaced. These old routers usually do not pass more than 50Mbt of data. You can now get 500Mbt from Frontier for $179.99. This is not a pitch for Frontier but in the world of VoIP more bandwidth is better. Second, you need a router that offers Bandwidth Management, QOS or Traffic Shaping. Older routers do not offer this. Listen up people, there is a reason this is on the new routers.

Item #2: POE (Power Over Ethernet) Switches. VoIP phones come with a power supply that plugs into the phone and then under the desk into a battery backup. Use these as a last resort. First, the cords are usually no longer than 6 feet which really limits where you can place the phone on the desk or impossible to wall mount. Second, who wants another cable. Third, better make sure it is plugged into the right side on a battery backup or you will be dropping calls. Fourth, the power supplies get kicked under the desk and come unplugged dropping calls. Gigabyte POE Switches are a must. Make sure they are on the quote.

Item #3: Battery Backup. It is the solution provider’s responsibility to make sure the phones are going to stay connected during the inevitable power outage. You know Florida is the Lightning Capitol of the southeast. Not only do we need to insure the Router and the POE switch are on battery backup but also the Internet providers equipment. Frontier installs a very small battery on their FIOS units but Spectrum does not. If any of these items are missed your VoIP service will be down.

Quality Router/Firewall, POE Switch and all equipment on Battery Backup. Sounds simple but missed 9 out of 10 times.
